A computer security cabinet is a piece of furniture designed to physically secure various computer components as part of a single system. This typically includes some form of secure mounting, cable, or enclosure for the monitor to prevent it from being removed from the computer cabinet. The computer itself is usually enclosed within the cabinet, which often has a locking door to protect the computer from theft or tampering, and can enclose other components such as a printer. A computer security cabinet may also be designed to include wheels, allowing the cabinet to be moved from one location to another and still protect its contents.
The basic design of a computer security cabinet typically follows its stated purpose, which is to house a computer in a way that protects it from damage or theft. This can be accomplished in a number of ways, however, depending on the design of the computer. Desktop computers, for example, can usually fit inside of a computer security cabinet with the monitor on the top of the cabinet, often connected with a security cable, bolted to the cabinet, or enclosed within a frame. Laptop computers can typically be used in place of a monitor, though the entire computer is often affixed with a metal security cable to keep it connected to the cabinet.
A computer security cabinet is usually designed with an internal compartment beneath the space for the monitor. The computer tower or case itself is then placed within this compartment, which can be closed and locked. Additional security features may allow the tower to be bolted down within the cabinet or connected with metal cables. Other components can usually fit within a computer security cabinet as well, such as printers, scanners, modems, and routers.
Additional features of a computer security cabinet can include folding surfaces that can be extended outward to provide the user with additional workspace for papers. Many cabinets also have a sliding tray for the keyboard and mouse, which allows the cabinet to have a small profile while not in use. A computer security cabinet can also be designed with wheels at the bottom. These wheels allow the cabinet to function more like a secure computer cart, which can then be pushed between rooms, and is often ideal for use in professional offices and schools.
