The term video is used both to distinguish the image component of a combined audio-visual technology and to refer to a movie that includes both audio and video components. In the name Video Sound Editor™, the second meaning is referred to. This product, by Magic Software™, allows the user to edit the sound segment only of a video, as well as split and combine movie clips. It does not, however, allow for changes to the images other than splitting and combining clips. Video Sound Editor™ is one of a line of products that the company makes, and a demo that watermarks the output can be downloaded for free to try out its capabilities.
Video Sound Editor™ has gone through several versions, and as of February 2009 was at version 4.2. It provides a visual sound track editor and allows the user to see the video images matching the sound as the sound is played or scrubbed. The software allows the user to import video clips, extract audio from a video clip, edit existing audio, record new audio, attach sound to a video clip, and split and combine video clips, and it also converts video to a variety of formats. A variety of audio effects can be applied by Video Sound Editor™, including a compressor, an equalizer, reverb, vibrato, and trim. Filters that it can apply include high-pass and low-pass filters, a denoise filter, and shelf filters.
The formats that Video Sound Editor™ can read are ASF (Advanced Systems Format), AVI (Audio Video Interleaved), MPEG 1, 2, and 4 (Motion Pictures Experts Group), PSP (PlayStation Portable), QuickTime®, RealMedia formats, and 3GP (Third Generation Partnership). It can export a variety of formats, including Flash® video — SWF (Small Web Format) and FLV (Flash® Video); various flavors of AVI — DivX (DIgital Video EXpress), Xvid (an open source product that reversed the name of the commercial DivX for effect), H.264 (MPEG4 Part 10), M-JPEG (Motion JPEG — Joint Photographic Experts Group); various NTSC/PAL (National TV Standards Committee) versions — DVD (Digital VideoDisc or Digital Versatile Disc), SVCD (Super Video CD), VCD (Video CD); MPEG 1 and 4, and 3GP. The audio formats it exports include MP2, MP3, WAV (Waveform Audio File Format), WMA (Windows® Media Audio), OGG, VOX (also known as Dialogic ADPCM — Adaptive Differential Pulse Code Modulation), and SWF.
